About Burkina Faso

Location
Burkina Faso is a land-locked French speaking country in West Africa. It is bordered by the Ivory Coast (South West), Mali (North), Togo and Ghana (South), Niger (East) and Benin in the South East.
Its area is 105,900 square-miles which is slightly higher than that of Colorado (104,100). The climate is tropical with a short rainy season that goes from May to mid-October.

Meaning of Burkina Faso
Burkina means integrity in the more dialect and Faso fatherland in the Dioula tongue. Together, Burkina Faso means country of integrity.The name was acquired in 1984 when Thomas Sankara became President and decided to change the former colonial name Haute Volta (Upper Volta) into a name that means something to the native people.

Population
The population of Burkina Faso is approximately 15.8 million inhabitants according to the latest World Bank statistics. The vast majority of this population lives in rural areas with very precarious living conditions such as lack of clean water, clinics and basic infrastructure. That rural population is predominantly illiterate and live from subsistence farming by making use of rudimentary means of farming.The literacy which is defined as the percent of people age 15 and over that can read and write rate in Burkina Faso is approximately 25% which is a big problem for implementing programs in rural areas and getting people to adopt change.Many people still burn and cut trees for farming and are resistant to applying best practices in the area of farming.

Poverty
Burkina Faso is a very poor country even when compared with African standards. According to the 2010 Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Program, the country is classified as a low human development country and ranked 161 over 169 nations. The type of poverty in rural areas is extreme with people eating about a meal a day or less and some children showing malnutrition signs.
